Smart Recorder - The Voice Recorder App Reviews

Its OK

It deleted easily from the application folder. I deleted it because I misunderstood its purpose.

Good

Seems to have a good premise. New recording, starting, stopping pausing the basic functions are all there. As there is considerable space in the buttons area, I would like to see the recording control button graphics a bit larger and spaced out, though when you customize you can do that. The start button text needs to be a graphic like on a current consumer electronics (that graphic is the red dot append button). The start button should be the same size as the other buttons and in the immediate area. Put a button outline around the graphics and the start text if you have to use the text to label the button. Develop the tagging concept a bit more and think about making it more inituitive. Also, maybe a gesture or keystroke combination to execute a control function. If you can set preferences for keyboard control, track pad, etc. and some thing that the user can vary depending on their situation. In audio applications the space bar is often used to start a recording, stop a recording and it might work here. Interesting idea and could have some real benefit if its tweaked a bit. thx

Very helpful

I could see this being pretty helpful for meetings and lectures. I may even try this in depositions. The controls are a little hicky, but still functional. I agree that the start/stop/start controls could be more intuitive, and the ability to instantly start a new tag without using the mouse would allow the user to enter text faster on the fly. Also, when you scroll the highlight bar through the tags, the text/notes should scroll so that you see the notes that correspond with that highlighted tag. But thats all just fine tuning. Overall, this is a cool app.

I think this is great, I am using its brother app on ipad. Thanks for giving it away now.

no volume setting, no way to remove tags

the title says it: I find the volume of the recording way too low, and I cant say any way to adjust it. Also, I couldnt find a way to remove tags. This is really basic functionality thats missing (or is impossible to find, same same).

The Magic is Lesser

When I looked at this app, it appeared like it was speech recognition software. Well, It isnt. It can record your voice and you add some wort of description to the right. I am disappointed with what I downloaded. It seemed too good to be true; free speech recognition app... It WAS too good to be true.

Very Good. The price couldn

Seriously, I cannot understand people who complain. Yes, it is a little rough around the edges. Yes, these guys could use some better gui design (the dock icon is very big and ugly). But this is a very simple and VERY useful app. At the beginning I was a bit concerned about the quality of the recordings but if you go to preferences and select the appropriate format to save your audio files, you can get really high quality audio. The overall quality will depend, of course, on how good your mic is. Also, the better quality the bigger the resulting audio file will be. I did some testing with WAV (lpcm) and the quality was superb. In the end, I opted for Apple-MPEG-4 (acc) and I found this was a very good quality/file size ratio. I have a MacBook Air and I did some testing in a big room, speaking more than 6 meters away from the computer, not using any external mic. The results were very satisfactory. This is going to be VERY useful to take notes at meetings and be able to figure out what was actually said in a very easy way. I think this kind of app is a test for what the app store could do. Now we have it for free. If enough people use it and like it, this could be sold at iPhone app store prices and it could become a very viable business for the developpers. In an obscure web site at $30, I dont think I would have even given it a try. Being free or very cheap and with the ease of installation provided by the Apple store? Thats a very different proposition. I think developpers for Mac apps should really start trying this new concept. Yes, it takes a LOT of effort to develop software but once the work is done, it doesnt cost anything to distribute it. Perhaps you make more money selling thousands of copies at $5 than trying to sell the same app for what would in principle seem like a more reasonable price.

Very useful, syncs with iOS version.

This is a very useful application for linking written notes to an audio recording, and then - during playback - being able to jump to any part of the audio recording where a written note was linked. I have a feeling its going to become one of those tools that, looking back, I wont be able to understand how I did business before it was available. Add the fact that this Mac application is free... well, I have to say, Im surprised its free. I hope it drives downloads of their paid iOS app. The iOS app version of this Mac application has both a free "lite" version and a full version. The only difference between the two is that the lite version will only sync recordings of three minutes or less. It will still record and playback longer files, it just wont sync them. So you can really put the iOS app through its paces before deciding if the full version is worth three bucks. In my estimation, it definitely is (unless, of course, every recording you make is fer-shure going to be less than three minutes in length). The UI could be better, and I could make a long list of refinements and feature requests. But for a free tool like this, its fine as is. Ill look forward to the developers updates and Ill contact them via email to make specific suggestions.

Horrible UI

This UI smacks back to the Macs of the 80s even before System 7. It may record, but any usefullness it may have had gets losts due to the crappy UI. Wish I was warned, would not have purchased.

Audioboo hoo

Not bad. I like the "auto pause" feature. If I pause for a while, the recording pauses with me. Upon playback, I hear my voice without delays or dropouts. While this sounds better, it also may have an additional advantage of reducing filesize. The shortcoming appears to be formatting. While options appear to include aac (like mp4), I did not find a compatible format option. I could not, for instance, saving my recording to the audioboo social network because the format was not recognized. While the graphics are quaint, they did not inhibit the usefulness of the app. I would suggest several upgrades: (1) Fix and expand format options. (2) Improve graphics and rendering. In comparison with tapedeck ($25), the price is right.

Wouldnt have purchased had I realized...

I was looking for an application that would be able to record VOIP phone calls, including the other person on the line. This does not accomplish that, as only what comes into a microphone is recorded, not what plays through the audio output. If that were the case, this would be a great app. Now it is just $5 that I wasted. I can understand that this app would serve other functions, so I wont give it a 1-star rating, but this app could be improved on by implementing such a change.

Let me know when this is done

What are others reviewing? A little rough around the edges? This is not even ready for beta. This is just a very basic recording app that happens to allow you to take some text notes. You cant organize, format or insert graphics. It requires you to open each session rather than having the typical navigation we are (or I am) used to (e.g. evernote, onenote, notebook, etc etc), no folders, no default location, almost zero configuration options and a simply hideous UI that looks (and acts) like a 15-year old Windows 3.1 application. OK, credit where due: it does allow you to jump to parts of the recording by adding a tag, but when I use recording software I just jot down the time Im at in the recording - this functionality is a minor time saver.

A little buggy

I was testing my microphone on this program and it crashes when i close a file and make a new one, besides that it was pretty good and someone below my comment said the interface was ugly and i agree with them, it is ugly but it can get the job done for recording things, for being free it is a good app ill giv it 3 stars

Delete appends?

Since all Appends are listed it would be nice if you could select and delete the ones you dont want before saving. If you can Im sorry I havent learned how to do it.

Great for lectures!

This was one of the first apps I downloaded from the Mac App Store. I have used this app in all of my college classes this semester so far. Yes, I agree that the app icon and GUI could be a bit smaller and less Windowesque, but the important thing is it gets the job done well. I really like the auto-pause feature and the ability to add tags to specific parts of a lecture. The sound quality is perfect as far as I can tell, but I dont have a trained ear to recognize miniscule differences in sound quality anyway. I highly recommend this app for students and professionals who regularly attend lectures and meetings and would like to be able to take less notes by hand!

Good, but needs exporting

Great app but needs an export capability or audio file change

Great app, just one suggestion.

A keyboard shortcut for making a new tag. It would be very helpful, since, when typing, it would flow more smoothly, instead of having to stop and use your mouse/trackpad. Other than that, great app, and thank you very much!

Good, but needs keyboard shortcut for new tag!!

Very cool app but the only way to add a new tag is to click the icon with a mouse. That function needs a keyboard shortcut badly!

Great

Easy to use, easy to record, great app!

Audio with tags from Ipad/Iphone app

I could only ask for 2 things: - import capability for audio with tags as a combined file form from the ipad or iphone app; this has been done with the audionote app for example. (including photo tags would be nice) - A photo tag option for the computer, say, when a webcam is attached.
